Marrakech in April: One of the Two Best Months

April is one of the two best months of the year in Marrakech: a 25.8 °C average high and a 12.4 °C average low, eight and a half hours of sun a day and thirteen hours of daylight. Two trade-offs come with it: 40 mm of rain over seven days, and demand high enough that you should book three to four months ahead.

April in figures

Measure Value What it means
Average high 25.8 °C Ideal for walking all day
Average low 12.4 °C A light layer is enough in the evening
Hottest days around 34.5 °C Record: 38 °C in 2013
Coolest nights around 8.5 °C Record: 5.7 °C in 2005
Rain 40 mm over 7 days One of the wetter months
Sun 8.5 h per day 65 % of daylight hours
Daylight 13 h 00 Three hours more than January
Humidity 54 % Comfortable

Climate normals for 1991-2020 at the Marrakech station, published by Climates to Travel. These are thirty-year averages: any single year can depart from them noticeably. Properties at the foot of the Atlas sit two to three hundred metres higher and are routinely two to four degrees cooler at night.

April is also the most requested month: if your dates fall in this window, it is worth checking availability before reading on.

Why April works so well

The ideal walking temperature

At a 25.8 °C high you can walk six hours in the medina without heat becoming the subject of the day. That is exactly what July lacks, where the average high reaches 37.7 °C. And with thirteen hours of daylight the plan is no longer constrained by nightfall: you can string together three sites and a hammam without rushing.

City and mountains are good at the same time

This is rare. In January the city is pleasant but the mountains can be frozen. In July the mountains are an escape but the city is hard work. In April both work: the Ourika tracks are passable, the vegetation is at its best after the winter rains, and the peaks often still hold snow. The Ourika Valley day trip guide gives travel and walking times.

Dining outdoors becomes possible again

With nights at 12.4 °C a meal outside is comfortable with a light layer, which is not the case from December to March. That is why April and May, along with late September-October, are the two reliable windows for an event: a wedding, a birthday, an offsite with a meal laid in a garden. See the Marrakech wedding venue guide and the Events and stays page.

The two trade-offs, taken seriously

Rain: 40 mm over seven days

April is, with February, March and November, among the wetter months of the year. That does not mean grey days: the rain arrives as showers and thunderstorms, often late in the afternoon. But for an event with a meal outdoors, seven statistical rain days in thirty demand a covered plan B. That is not an option, it is a budget line.

Crowds and prices

April concentrates European spring holidays and the best weather of the year. In practice: good addresses go three to four months ahead, longer for a whole house; minimum-night stays appear around the bank holidays; and rates are among the highest of the year. If your dates are flexible, the first half of October offers comparable conditions with fewer people, see the guide to the best time to visit.

The pool in April: the honest answer

With a 25.8 °C high the air is good but the water in an unheated outdoor pool stays cool, particularly early in the month and after a night at 8 °C. By late April, on a 30 °C day, it is perfectly swimmable. In practice: in April the pool is an afternoon pleasure, not the centre of the day. It becomes the centre from mid-May. If swimming is decisive for your stay, ask the property whether the pool is heated.

What to pack

  • Light clothing for the day, at a 26 °C average.
  • A warm layer for the evening: thirteen degrees of day-to-night movement remain.
  • A light waterproof, for the seven statistical rain days.
  • Good walking shoes: this is the month you walk most.
  • High-factor sunscreen: eight and a half hours of sun a day.
  • Swimwear, useful mainly late in the month.

Where to stay in April

In April every configuration works, which makes the choice freer than in December or July. The deciding factor returns to your plan rather than the climate. Bab Akoul Medina if you came for the city and want to do everything on foot. Bab Akoul Palmeraie if you want garden and space with the city within reach. Bab Akoul Atlas if you came for the views and the mountains, bearing in mind that nights there are cooler than in the city. The guide to Marrakech's areas compares the areas, the three-day Marrakech itinerary sets a plan, and the month-by-month weather guide places April in the year.
