Ourika Valley from Marrakech: The Complete Day Trip Guide
The Ourika Valley is the easiest escape from Marrakech: an hour to an hour and a half of driving towards the High Atlas, and the temperature drops, the air changes, the Berber villages climb the slopes. It works as a day trip, and it works better early.

Where the Ourika Valley is
The valley runs south of Marrakech, along the Ourika river, in the El Haouz province. The road climbs steadily through villages, terraced fields and walnut groves until it reaches Setti Fatma, the last village, where the waterfalls begin.
When to go
| Season | What it is like | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| March to May | Green slopes, high water, mild temperatures | The best window |
| June to August | Cool refuge from the city heat | Very busy at weekends |
| September to November | Clear light, low crowds | Water lower in the falls |
| December to February | Snow on the summits, cold mornings | Some tracks impassable |
What to do there
The Setti Fatma waterfalls
Seven falls, strung up the mountain. Reaching the first one takes 45 minutes to an hour of walking over rock, with a little scrambling and river crossings on stone slabs. Going further needs a guide and proper footwear. This is not a stroll.
- Trainers with grip at the very least, walking shoes ideally.
- Water, and a hat in summer. There is little shade on the rock.
- Local guides offer their services at the village entrance. Agree the price before you set off.
- Allow three hours in total for the first fall and back.
Lunch beside the river
The restaurants set their tables on platforms over the water. Grilled meat, tagine, mint tea. It is simple, and the setting does the rest.
Going higher
Early risers can push on towards the Yagour plateau and its rock engravings, with a local guide. That is a full day on its own, not an add-on.
What to take
- Shoes with grip. The rock is wet and polished near the falls.
- A layer: it is several degrees cooler than Marrakech, more so in the morning.
- Cash in small notes, for guides, tea and parking.
- Water, more than you think.
- A swimsuit in summer, if you want the natural pools.
How to avoid the crowds
- Leave before 8am. You will cross the city empty and arrive before the groups.
- Avoid Saturday and Sunday from June to August: Marrakech itself comes up here.
- Walk up early and have lunch late, rather than the other way round.
- Sleep at the foot of the Atlas, and the drive shrinks to a few minutes.
Sleeping at the foot of the Atlas rather than in town
From Marrakech, the Ourika is an outing. From the foot of the Atlas, it is the view from the window. Bab Akoul Atlas, in Sidi Abdellah Ghiate, sits in the El Haouz countryside with the mountains in front of it, and return transfers are included.
Leaving from there means setting off at dawn without crossing Marrakech, reaching the waterfalls before anyone else, and being back for a swim in the early afternoon. If you would rather weigh up the districts first, our comparison of Marrakech neighbourhoods compares the medina, the Palmeraie, Hivernage and the foot of the Atlas.
The valley also makes a good third day in our three-day Marrakech itinerary, and a memorable outing for guests during a wedding weekend, as our Marrakech wedding guide explains.

Frequently asked questions
How far is the Ourika Valley from Marrakech?
About 60 kilometres to Setti Fatma, at the end of the valley, which means one hour to an hour and a half of driving depending on traffic leaving the city.
How long is the walk to the Setti Fatma waterfalls?
Allow 45 minutes to an hour to reach the first of the seven falls, over rock, with some scrambling and river crossings. Allow three hours there and back. Going further up needs a guide.
What is the best time of year for the Ourika Valley?
March to May for green slopes and high water, September to November for clear light and fewer people. In summer the valley is a cool refuge but very busy at weekends.
Do you need a guide for the Ourika Valley?
Not for the drive or the first waterfall, which is signposted and busy. Yes beyond that, and yes for the Yagour plateau. Guides offer their services at the entrance to Setti Fatma; agree the price before setting off.
Can you swim in the Ourika?
There are natural pools, and people do swim in summer. The water is cold and the current is strong after rain or snowmelt, so judge the conditions on the day.
