Marrakech to Essaouira: The Day Trip

Essaouira is about 177 kilometres from Marrakech, a 2 h 30 to 3 h 30 drive depending on how you travel. The Supratours bus costs 100 to 140 dirhams each way. It is the excursion that changes the scenery most completely: you leave a red city at 37 °C for a white, windy town on the Atlantic.

The travel options, compared

Option Duration Indicative price Note
Supratours bus 2 h 30 to 3 h 100 to 140 MAD Several departures daily, book ahead
CTM bus about 3 h about 105 MAD Fewer departures, often one in the morning
Private driver 2 h 30 to 3 h depends on the vehicle Free stops, ideal for several people
Organised excursion 3 h variable Fixed timings, frequent argan stop
Hire car 2 h 30 to 3 h depends on duration Easy, straight road

Fares and durations collected in October 2026 from the bus companies and local guides. Sources give 100 to 140 dirhams per journey on Supratours and about 105 on CTM, for 2 h 30 to 3 h 30 of driving. Check timetables on the operator's site before travelling.

The road is one of the simplest in Morocco: straight, in good condition, with argan groves along much of it. That is also why organised excursions almost all stop at an argan oil cooperative, useful or irritating depending on your mood.

Day trip or a night there?

This is the real trade-off, and our answer is clear: if you can, stay a night.

As a day trip

Ten to twelve hours door to door, five to six of them in a car. That leaves four to five hours on the spot, enough for the ramparts, the port, the medina and a fish lunch. It is doable and plenty of people do it.

With a night

You gain sunset on the ramparts and early morning at the port, the two best moments in the town, and you remove five hours of driving from a single day. On a week-long trip, it is the best possible use of two days.

The contrast is the point: the ocean for a day, and the quiet of a garden on return.

What to see, in order of interest

  1. The ramparts and the Skala of the port, especially late afternoon when the light goes horizontal.
  2. The working fishing port in the morning: noisy, pungent and completely authentic.
  3. The medina, a listed site, markedly smaller and calmer than Marrakech's. You do not really get lost in it.
  4. The beach, enormous, for walking rather than swimming: the Atlantic is cold all year.
  5. The thuya marquetry workshops, the local speciality, in the lanes behind the Skala.

The wind, which decides your day

Essaouira is nicknamed the windy city, and it is not a tourist-board nickname. The trade winds blow much of the year, which explains both the town's reputation among kitesurfers and the fact that people rarely sunbathe lying down.

  • In summer it is a considerable advantage: a windy 25 °C while Marrakech sits at 38 °C with no air.
  • In spring and autumn the wind is still there: bring a windproof layer even in fine weather.
  • In winter it can make the day frankly cold. A warm jacket is necessary.
  • For a meal outdoors, find a sheltered terrace: in full wind, lunch becomes an exercise.

This is why Essaouira is the summer excursion par excellence from Marrakech. The month-by-month weather guide gives the temperature gaps, and the what-to-wear guide what to pack.

For a group or an event

Essaouira works well as one day of a group trip, on two conditions. First, travel by minibus with a driver rather than on a scheduled bus, to keep control of the timings. Second, a booked table: the good addresses by the port fill at midday and a group of twelve cannot be improvised. We organise the day from the house, transfers and booking included, as part of a private hire.

Where to return to, and how far

If you return the same evening, the journey time from your address matters. Bab Akoul Palmeraie and Bab Akoul Medina are on the right side of the city for the Essaouira road. Bab Akoul Atlas, to the south, adds twenty to thirty minutes. The guide to Marrakech's areas compares the areas, the day trips comparison ranks all the excursions, and the Ouzoud waterfalls guide covers the other great day out.

Marrakech to Essaouira: frequently asked questions

How long is the journey from Marrakech to Essaouira?

Between 2 h 30 and 3 h 30 depending on how you travel, for about 177 kilometres. The road is straight and in good condition, one of the simplest in Morocco.

How much is the bus from Marrakech to Essaouira?

Sources give 100 to 140 dirhams each way on Supratours and about 105 dirhams on CTM. Supratours runs more daily departures. Check timetables and fares on the operator's site before travelling.

Can you do Essaouira as a day trip from Marrakech?

Yes, allowing ten to twelve hours door to door with five to six of them in a car. That leaves four to five hours there, enough for the ramparts, the port and lunch. A night there is considerably more comfortable.

Can you swim in Essaouira?

The beach is enormous but the Atlantic stays cold all year and the wind is constant. Essaouira is walked more than it is swum, except for board sports.

When should you go to Essaouira from Marrakech?

In summer above all: it is the escape from the heat, with a possible twenty-degree gap on some days. Spring and autumn are pleasant but windy, and winter needs a proper jacket.

Is Essaouira worth the trip?

Yes, for the contrast: a white Atlantic town three hours from a red continental one. If your trip is three days long, know that it takes a third of it.
