Day Trips from Marrakech: The Comparison

Five excursions from Marrakech are genuinely worth the journey, and they demand very different amounts of time: half a day for Agafay, a short day for the Ourika, a full day for Ouzoud and Essaouira, and two to three days for the Sahara. The classic mistake is fitting too many into a three-day trip.

The comparison, on one page

Destination Distance Drive each way Total time Why go
Agafay desert 30 to 40 km 40 to 60 min Half day or evening Dinner under the stars, stone landscape
Ourika Valley 60 to 70 km 1 h to 1 h 30 Short day Cool air, a river, a walk
Ouzoud waterfalls 150 to 180 km 2 h 30 to 3 h 9 to 10 h Morocco's highest falls
Essaouira about 177 km 2 h 30 to 3 h 30 10 to 12 h The ocean, the ramparts, the wind
Sahara (Zagora) about 360 km 6 to 7 h 2 days minimum Real dunes
Sahara (Merzouga) about 560 km 9 to 10 h 3 days advised Erg Chebbi, the great sand sea

Distances and durations collected in October 2026 from local operators and guides. They vary with the routing and the traffic.

How many to do, by length of stay

Three days

One excursion only, and preferably a short one. The Ourika or an evening at Agafay. Ouzoud or Essaouira would take a third of the trip and deprive you of the city, which is the reason you came. The three-day Marrakech itinerary shows how to fit that day in without sacrificing the rest.

Five days

Two excursions, one of them long. An evening at Agafay and a day at Ouzoud or Essaouira, for instance. Keep one full day with no car: consecutive journeys are what tires people most on a short trip.

A week

Three excursions, Sahara included if it matters to you. But know what you are buying: Zagora is twelve to fourteen hours in a car across two days. Plenty of travellers come back saying they would have preferred Agafay and two more days in the city.

Twenty minutes out of the city, the countryside begins. That is Marrakech's advantage.

The four mistakes that spoil an excursion

  1. Leaving too late. All these roads are driven there and back in a day: an hour lost in the morning is paid for with a return after dark.
  2. Doing two excursions back to back. The second day in a car is always harder than the first, and you end up looking at the landscape without seeing it.
  3. Underestimating altitude and wind. The Ourika, Ouzoud and Agafay are cooler than the city; Essaouira is frankly windy even in summer.
  4. Not bringing cash. Parking, boats, tips, small restaurants: none of it takes cards.

With a driver, in a group, or in a hire car?

Three different logics, and the right choice depends mostly on numbers.

  • For two, the organised excursion is the cheapest, at the cost of fixed timings and a group.
  • For three or more, a private driver becomes competitive and transforms the day: leave when you want, stop where you want, return at your own pace.
  • A hire car only makes sense if you are comfortable on narrow mountain roads and if you are staying outside the centre, where parking is possible.

For a group or a family we organise days with a driver from the house, picnic included if you want one. The villa private-hire guide sets out what a private hire covers.

The five detailed guides

Each destination has its own constraints of timing, cost and season. The Agafay desert guide covers the evening in the stone desert. The Ourika Valley day trip guide covers the valley and the walks. The Ouzoud waterfalls guide gives the shape of the day and the on-site costs. The Essaouira day trip guide compares the bus and a driver. And the Sahara from Marrakech guide says honestly what two or three days of driving cost.

Where to stay to range out from

Where you stay changes the journey time of every excursion. Bab Akoul Atlas is closest to the Ourika and Agafay, and the logical choice if the mountains are your priority. Bab Akoul Palmeraie is a good compromise between the city and the roads out. Bab Akoul Medina is ideal for the city but adds twenty to thirty minutes to every departure, the time it takes to reach the car. The guide to Marrakech's areas compares the areas, and the airport and transfers guide the times from the airport.

Day trips from Marrakech: frequently asked questions

What is the best day trip from Marrakech?

It depends on the time you have. For half a day, the Agafay desert, 40 to 60 minutes away. For a short day, the Ourika Valley. For a full day, the Ouzoud waterfalls or Essaouira. The Sahara needs two to three days.

How many excursions should I plan on a three-day trip?

One only, and preferably a short one: the Ourika or an evening at Agafay. Ouzoud or Essaouira take a full day, a third of the trip.

Can you see the Sahara in a day from Marrakech?

No. Zagora is about 360 kilometres, 6 to 7 hours of driving, and Merzouga 560 kilometres, 9 to 10 hours. Allow two days minimum for Zagora and three for Merzouga.

Should I hire a car in Marrakech?

Only if you are comfortable on narrow mountain roads and are staying outside the centre. For three people or more, a private driver often costs barely more and transforms the day.

Which excursion works with children?

The Ourika Valley, for the river and the short drive, or an evening at Agafay with no motorised activity. Ouzoud involves a descent and a climb back up staircases, and the Sahara is too long in a car.

Do I need cash for excursions?

Yes, always. Car parks, boats, local guides, tips and small restaurants do not take cards. Bring small dirham notes.
