Marrakech Airport to the City: Transfers and Taxis

Marrakech Menara airport sits about 6 kilometres from the centre, a 15 to 30 minute drive depending on traffic. Allow 70 to 150 dirhams in a petit taxi by day, 150 to 200 at night, and 30 dirhams per person for the line 19 shuttle. The only real trap is getting in without agreeing the fare.

The options, compared

Option Indicative price Duration Who it suits
Petit taxi, daytime 70 to 150 MAD 15 to 30 min Two or three people, light luggage
Petit taxi, night 150 to 200 MAD 15 to 25 min Late arrival, if you accept the surcharge
Line 19 shuttle 30 MAD per person 30 to 45 min Tight budget, little luggage
Pre-booked transfer from about 15 € 15 to 30 min Family, group, night arrival, first visit
Transfer by your hotel depends on the address 15 to 40 min House outside the centre, luggage, children

Ranges collected in October 2026 from transfer operators and local guides. Petit-taxi fares are not published in an official table available online: sources give 70 to 150 dirhams by day and 150 to 200 at night. Check the rate posted at the airport taxi rank before you get in.

Our recommendation is simple: for a first visit, an arrival after 9 pm, a group or children, book the transfer in advance. The premium over a taxi is small and it removes the negotiation at the moment you are least equipped to have it.

How to take a taxi without being caught out

  1. Find the official rank at the arrivals exit and the posted rate. It exists; it is rarely offered unprompted.
  2. State your destination, then ask the price. In that order.
  3. If there is no meter, fix the amount before getting in and repeat it aloud once you are seated.
  4. Pay in small notes. A 200-dirham note for a 100-dirham fare often produces no change.
  5. For the medina, know that the taxi stops at the edge of the pedestrian quarter: the last stretch is on foot or by handcart.

The part nobody mentions: the last kilometre

This is the real difficulty of arriving in Marrakech, and it has nothing to do with the taxi. In the medina, cars do not pass. The driver drops you at a gate, and there are 100 to 400 metres of alleys left with the suitcases, often with no usable street number and with GPS dropping out.

Three solutions, in order of effectiveness: ask your accommodation to meet you at an agreed gate, which most good addresses do; have them send you the name of the derb and a photo of the door in advance; or choose an address reachable by car. The guide to Marrakech's areas says which areas are drivable.

Towards the Atlas the road leaves the city quickly: allow 40 to 60 minutes from the airport.

How long to your address

Destination From the airport Note
Medina, Jemaa el-Fna 15 to 25 min Last stretch on foot
Gueliz, Hivernage 10 to 20 min All reachable by car
Palmeraie 25 to 40 min Car access, private gate
Foot of the Atlas 40 to 60 min Mountain road at the end
Ourika Valley 60 to 90 min See the dedicated guide

These are orders of magnitude in normal traffic. At peak hours and over public holidays, add a third. If you are heading on an excursion the next day, the Ourika Valley day trip guide gives real journey times.

For a group or a family we arrange transfers both ways from the airport, including at night, as part of a private hire.

On arrival: the three things to do, in order

  • Withdraw dirhams at the airport cash machine and ask for small notes. The dirham cannot be bought abroad.
  • Buy or activate a local SIM if you want one: the operators have desks in arrivals and data packages are cheap.
  • Tell your accommodation you have landed, so the welcome at the end of the alley is ready.

And for the journey back?

Plan to be at the airport two hours before a European flight, two and a half in holiday periods: the security queues at Menara lengthen considerably for weekend departures. From the medina, add the time to reach the car on foot. We arrange return transfers to match flight times, including very early ones: write to us via the Events and stays page. The guide to flights to Marrakech summarises airlines and flight times.

Marrakech airport: frequently asked questions

How far is Marrakech airport from the city centre?

About 6 kilometres from the medina, a 15 to 30 minute drive depending on traffic. It is one of the closest airports to a city centre among major tourist destinations.

How much is a taxi from Marrakech airport to the medina?

Sources converge on 70 to 150 dirhams by day and 150 to 200 at night, with the night surcharge starting at 8 or 9 pm depending on the source. There is no official fare table available online: check the rate posted at the rank before you get in.

Is there a bus from Marrakech airport?

Yes, line 19 connects the airport to the centre for about 30 dirhams per person, in 30 to 45 minutes. It is the cheapest option, less practical with large luggage.

Should I book a transfer in advance?

It is not essential, but it is recommended for a first visit, an arrival after 9 pm, a group or children. The premium over a taxi is small and it removes the negotiation on arrival.

Can the taxi take me to my riad door?

Not always. Cars do not circulate in the medina: the taxi stops at a gate and 100 to 400 metres remain on foot. Ask your accommodation to meet you at an agreed gate.

How early should I arrive at Menara for my flight?

Two hours for a European flight, two and a half in holiday periods or for a weekend departure, when the security queues lengthen noticeably.
