Where to Stay in Marrakech: Choosing the Right Area
In Marrakech the district matters more than the address. A riad in the medina and a villa in the Palmeraie are not the same trip, nor the same rhythm, nor the same days. Here is what each one gains you, and what it costs you.
Which district for which stay
| District | Who it suits | To the medina | From the airport | What you give up |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Medina | First visit, short stay | you are in it | 10 to 15 min | Quiet, and cars do not reach the doors |
| Palmeraie | Families, couples, 3 nights and more | 20 to 30 min | 20 to 30 min | Independence without a car |
| Hivernage and Guéliz | Business, short stays | 10 to 15 min | 10 to 15 min | The sense of being somewhere else |
| Foot of the Atlas | Long stays, retreats, events | around 40 min | around 45 min | The city as a daily backdrop |
Indicative driving times, outside rush hour. Menara airport is about 6 km from the centre.
The medina: in the middle, noise included
- Who it suits. First visit, short stay, wanting to be in the city rather than beside it.
- What you gain. Everything on foot: the souks, Jemaa el-Fna, the palaces, the museums. Riads, those traditional houses built around a patio, offer a striking contrast between the street and the interior.
- What you give up. The quiet is never total: the call to prayer, scooters, lanes that stay lively late. Cars do not reach the doors, so you do the last stretch on foot with your bags. Rooms are often smaller.
Our House here: Bab Akoul Medina, Derb Moulay Abdelkader, Hay Dabachi. It is the starting point for day one of our three-day Marrakech itinerary.
The Palmeraie: space and garden
- Who it suits. Families, couples, stays of more than three nights, and anyone who wants a pool and room to move.
- What you gain. Large gardens, palm trees, silence, pools that actually get used. The days organise themselves differently: you come back for lunch, you swim, you head out again late afternoon.
- What you give up. You depend on a car. Allow 20 to 30 minutes to the medina, more at busy times.
Our House here: Bab Akoul Palmeraie.
Hivernage and Guéliz: the modern city
- Who it suits. Business travel, short stays with appointments, contemporary restaurants.
- What you gain. Wide avenues, easy taxis, shops, somewhere to go in the evening. Hivernage is the district closest to the airport, only a few kilometres away.
- What you give up. The sense of being somewhere else. You could be in a lot of cities.
The foot of the Atlas: countryside and mountains
- Who it suits. Long stays, retreats, private events, and travellers coming back to Marrakech having already done the city.
- What you gain. Air, stars, gentler summer temperatures, and the mountain roads immediately at hand. The estates here are large and often available exclusively.
- What you give up. The city becomes an excursion rather than a backdrop. Allow forty minutes.
Our House here: Bab Akoul Atlas, Sidi Abdellah Ghiate, El Haouz. It is also the most practical base for our complete guide to the Ourika Valley, and it is where we host weddings, as our Marrakech wedding guide explains.
Riad, villa or hotel
| Type | Where | What you get | The weak point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Riad | Medina | Patio house, few rooms, a lot of character | Smaller rooms, access on foot |
| Villa or guest house | Palmeraie, countryside | Garden, pool, space | A car is essential |
| Conventional hotel | Hivernage, Guéliz | Services and predictability | Less character |
From Menara airport
- The airport is about 6 kilometres from the centre, 15 to 25 minutes depending on traffic.
- A taxi to the medina costs around 70 MAD. Agree the price before you get in.
- Bus 19 links the airport to Jemaa el-Fna via Guéliz.
- With us, return transfers are included at the Atlas, which settles the question.
Our answer: do not choose
We run three Houses, one in each of these worlds: Bab Akoul Medina for immersion, Bab Akoul Palmeraie for the garden, Bab Akoul Atlas for the mountains.
Many of our guests do two of them, sometimes all three, within one stay. Two nights in each, and Marrakech stops being a city and becomes three places. That is the logic behind our three-day Marrakech itinerary, and the reason it never makes you cross the city twice in one day.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best area to stay in Marrakech?
The medina for a first visit and a short stay, because everything is walkable. The Palmeraie for more than three nights, with family or if you want a pool. Hivernage for business travel. The foot of the Atlas for a long stay or a private event.
Do you need a car in Marrakech?
Not if you sleep in the medina: everything is walkable and taxis are plentiful. In the Palmeraie or at the foot of the Atlas, yes, or a property that handles transfers.
How far is Marrakech airport from the centre?
About 6 kilometres, 15 to 25 minutes by car depending on traffic. Hivernage is the closest district, the Palmeraie the furthest.
Riad or villa in Marrakech?
A riad is a patio house in the medina, few rooms and a lot of character. A villa, in the Palmeraie or the countryside, gives you the garden and the pool. The choice depends mostly on how long you are staying.
