The Agafay Desert from Marrakech: The Guide

The Agafay desert is 30 to 40 kilometres from Marrakech, a 40 to 60 minute drive. It is not the Sahara: it is a stone desert of ochre hills, with no dunes. That is exactly what makes it the best compromise of a trip, because you dine under the stars and still sleep in your own bed.

Agafay is not the Sahara, and that is good news

This needs saying plainly, because it is the main source of disappointment: Agafay is rocky desert, not a sand sea. If you came for the great orange dunes of the photographs, they are not here. What you get instead is 90 % of the experience for 10 % of the journey.

Agafay Sahara (Merzouga)
Distance 30 to 40 km about 560 km
Drive each way 40 to 60 min 9 to 10 h
Landscape Stone, ochre hills Sand dunes
Minimum time Half a day Three days
Night in a tent Possible, optional Essential
Home the same night Yes No

Distances, durations and price ranges collected in October 2026 from camps and transfer operators. Sources give 30 to 40 km and 40 to 60 minutes of driving, and overnight rates from 120 to over 1,900 euros for two depending on the camp. Get what is included confirmed in writing.

The four formats, and what they are worth

Dinner at sunset

The most requested and the best value. Leave late afternoon, sunset over the hills, dinner under canvas with music, home around 11 pm. Sources give a wide range, from about 28 to 35 euros per person for the simpler formats and around 55 at an upmarket camp. This is the one to pick if you only have an evening.

A half-day with an activity

Quad bike, camel, buggy or simply walking, depending on what you want. The landscape suits vehicles, which explains how many there are. If you came for quiet, ask explicitly for a camp with no quads nearby: sound carries a long way across an empty landscape.

A day by the pool

Several camps open their pool for the day. In July and August, when the city passes 37 °C, that is a credible escape. In winter it is pointless: see the month-by-month weather guide.

A night under canvas

The full experience, with sunrise thrown in, which is often better than the sunset. Sources give 120 to 250 euros a night for two at a comfortable camp, dinner and breakfast included, and up to 1,900 euros at the luxury end. Book knowing exactly what is included.

Five things to know before you go

  1. There is no public transport. Petit taxis do not leave the city: you need a private transfer, often around 80 euros per car each way, or transport included in the package.
  2. Evenings are cold. Altitude and the absence of vegetation drop the temperature as soon as the sun sets, in every season. A warm layer is not optional.
  3. Arriving after dark complicates everything. Camps sit on poorly signed tracks: leave early enough to arrive before nightfall.
  4. Phone signal is poor. Confirm the time and place of your pick-up before you leave coverage.
  5. Bring cash for tips: 20 to 50 dirhams for camp staff, 50 to 100 for the driver, per the customs reported by local guides.

Agafay for a group or an event

It is one of the best group evenings available around Marrakech: a spectacular setting, a seated dinner, music, and nobody watching the clock. Two practical caveats. First, transfer logistics for ten or twenty people need planning, because there is no fallback once you are there. Second, wind and cold make a winter evening uncomfortable: the reliable window runs from April to mid-June and from September to October.

We organise evenings like this alongside a private hire, with transfers and a plan B if the weather turns. The team-building ideas cover other formats, and the Events and stays page lets you write to us.

Agafay or the Ourika? The real comparison

These are the two short excursions from Marrakech, and they answer different needs. The Ourika means water, green and cool air: five to eight degrees below the city, a river, waterfalls, a walk if you want one. Agafay means stone, silence and the evening sky. In summer the Ourika is more comfortable by day; Agafay is better from 6 pm. The Ourika Valley day trip guide covers the other option, and the day trips comparison ranks them all.

Where to sleep afterwards

This is Agafay's central argument: you do not have to sleep there. An evening in the desert and a real night in a house is often the best of both. Bab Akoul Atlas is closest to the Agafay road and the most logical base. Bab Akoul Palmeraie and Bab Akoul Medina mean a longer drive back, but remain entirely workable. The guide to Marrakech's areas compares the journey times, and the what-to-wear guide says what to pack for a desert evening.

Agafay desert: frequently asked questions

How far is the Agafay desert from Marrakech?

Between 30 and 40 kilometres, a 40 to 60 minute drive depending on the camp and the traffic. It is the closest desert to Marrakech, which is why you can go and come back the same evening.

Is Agafay a real sand desert?

No. Agafay is a stone desert of ochre, rocky hills, with no dunes. The great sand dunes are in the Sahara, at Merzouga or Zagora, 6 to 10 hours of driving away.

How much does an evening in the Agafay desert cost?

Sources give from about 28 to 35 euros per person for a sunset dinner, and around 55 euros at an upmarket camp. A night under canvas runs 120 to 250 euros for two at a comfortable camp, and far more at the luxury end.

How do you get to Agafay from Marrakech?

There is no public transport and petit taxis do not leave the city. You need a private transfer, often around 80 euros per car each way, or a package that includes transport.

Do you have to stay overnight?

No, and that is Agafay's main appeal. The most common format is dinner at sunset with a return around 11 pm. A night under canvas adds sunrise, which is often the finest moment.

When is the best time for Agafay?

April to mid-June and September to October. In winter the evenings are cold in a landscape with no shelter, and in July-August the daytime is hard work, though the evening stays pleasant.
